What a NOx sensor does
A NOx sensor measures the concentration of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO₂) in diesel exhaust. The after-treatment controller uses this signal to dose reductant (DEF/AdBlue) into the SCR catalyst and to monitor how well NOx is being converted.
How it is built
A typical NOx sensor combines a ceramic sensing element inside a threaded probe, a heated measuring cell, a cable harness and a separate control module. The module drives the heater, evaluates the cell signal and communicates the result to the vehicle over the CAN bus.
Upstream vs downstream
An upstream sensor measures engine-out NOx before the SCR catalyst; a downstream sensor measures what remains after it. They are frequently different part numbers, with different cable lengths, connectors or software.
Why 12V and 24V matter
NOx sensor control modules are designed for a specific supply voltage. Passenger cars and light vehicles commonly use 12V systems; many heavy commercial vehicles use 24V. Never assume — confirm from the OE number.
General handling notes
- Follow the vehicle manufacturer's service procedure and torque values.
- Do not drop the sensor or strike the probe; the ceramic element is fragile.
- Keep the probe tip clean — avoid contact with sealants, oil or cleaning sprays.
- Route and secure the harness away from hot or moving parts.
- Clear fault codes and verify sensor readings with suitable diagnostic equipment after installation.
